Happy New Year

Or at least Happy New Year's Eve.

My apartment is still a mess (isn't it always?) but I do have half the sewing area cleaned up.  Perhaps tomorrow I'll take a picture of it.  What do you plan on doing on New Years Day?  I don't have anything specific in mind except to set up a schedule for at least January so I can be more organized.  Or attempt to be more organized.

I do have one project that NEEDS to be done by the end of January.  The Herd of Turtles.  Perhaps tomorrow I will try to use some tea or coffee to test the material.  I have gotten a few new things over the holidays.  One is this little pair of snips.

They are fiskars ( yeah, the tell tale orange) and fit nicely into my hand.  Another things that I signed up for was a group which want to do 2013 Random Acts of Kindness.  My first one is to give this mini hanging to a friend of my Niece in Law Jessica.  Her friend is undergoing breast cancer treatment.

We'll see how far the groups gets to.  I think it will be possible to reach the goal.  Especially when they count each preemie quilt as one, etc.  I'll keep you informed.  In the meantime time to get back to cleaning.

I'm tired!

Whew!  I'm tired.  I managed to get a lot of the fabric organized.  Still haven't seen my teapot blocks but they were easy to do so I can always redo them.  I need to go to Walmart again and pick up some more bins.  These smaller ones I'm liking better and I want them to be see through.

At the end of the day here is what I've accomplished.

This is my better or special quality fabric.  Might have to use some in order to make room in the bin.

This is my green and reds.

This has my background colors:  White, black, blue and beige.  The beige is in the green bag because I have a hard time telling it apart from some of the white on white.

Not sorted by any particular color but at least in a bin.

Another one where it's not sorted by colors.  I can do that another day.

My international fabric

I still have some fabric that needs to go into bins plus some projects.  Still overall a good start.  I can see this will lead to my sewing area being rearranged again.  Sigh.  It never ends (grins).

It's that time of the year again

With starting a new year, I decided that I would once again reorder my stash.  Part of that decision came because I can't find my finished blocks in order to finish up the teapot BOM.  That led me to realize that I had better get organized again.  This time I will give away what I don't want or think I will use.  I'm still keeping scraps because they go in a different storage area.

So this is what I'm starting with...

Keep in mind that I pulled these out of bins and drawers so it looks a little worse than what it was.  I also have noticed that some of my bins are broken so they will be thrown out.

I am going to put everything that I no longer want in one of the broken bins so that it won't go back into the stash.

I have managed to get my good fabric into one bin.

By good I mean my costly fabric.  That's the fabric that I bought from a quilt store or some lines like Stonehenge.  I am not putting the JoAnne's, Hobby Lobby, WalMart fabric in that bin.  I'll still buy from those three because it fits my budget and we don't have a local quilt shop anymore.  They have nice fabric also but you need to be more careful in your selection.

Next step is to put my normal background material (whites, blues, green, black, etc.) in containers.  Then I'll look and see what I have left.  It's a good thing to start the new year with it getting organized.  I know it won't stay that way but at least I'm attempting to start it off that way.  :)

New Block of the Month

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays

I hope everybody has a safe and merry holiday.

I finished most of my projects on time.  I still have the turtle to do but will roll that over into a Christmas/Happy Birthday present.  So I guess that is going to the top of my list of what to work on.  That is for another day though.  Today is time to rest up a bit.

I had a delightful Christmas Eve and Christmas day.  Christmas Eve I spent partly with mom and partly with my nephew Jason and his family.  Then today I took breakfast to mom and spent a couple of hours with her. All in all a good way to start the holiday.

They are a great bunch of kids and mom totally enjoyed the wall hangings that I made her.  The snowman one was hers but the flower one was given to another lady there.  Mom wanted to give her something since she always looked at mom's mini's all the time.  Mom said today that when she gave the woman the mini wall hanging she started to cry and say that she never got anything from anybody.

Jason and Jessica's family is very talented also.  They don't quilt (yet) but they do other things.  The kids got a kitchen toy (my word for it) that let them make cake pops (instead of lollipops, you use cake batter, etc.) so that is what Santa got on Christmas Eve.

The plate has the five cake pops (one for each child) and two chocolate bacon (tastes much better than it sounds) cookies to represent the parents on the plate all ready for Santa.

I was so honored also to get artwork from one of the girls.  :)

I think that she might turn out to be somewhat of an artist like her dad.  Jason got a calligraphy kit and some art supplies for Christmas so he did a family tree for his in-laws Christmas present.

What is nice to see is that they gave the kids some of the craft stuff also.  If it wasn't for cooking, they got some things for either Scrapbooking, drawing, or painting.  I liked those present much better than the toys that Liam got which looked like cockroaches running around.  At least the black one did.  The pink one was kinda cute.  It runs on a small battery so you just let them run around and try to catch them.  He got some ramps for them to run around on etc. but for some perverse reason he liked to let them run around on the kitchen linoleum floor.  :)  All in good fun though.

So with much amusement and silliness, I wish everybody as much fun as I had with my family gatherings this year.

4 days and counting - pressure is off

Four days til Christmas and the pressure is off.  I put Dan's penguins in the mail this morning.  Since it is mailed him at Dawn's I also put in a little something for her.  She won't get the Herd of Turtles wall hanging until later but her birthday is in January so perhaps I should strive for that?  I put in Chocolate Silk coffee for her.  :)  Oops.  I just realized that I didn't state which was for Dan and which was for her.  Oh well...I'll let them figure it out.

I didn't have my camera at home so had to take the pictures with the cell phone.  I am finding that I take more pictures with that than anything else it seems.  Must remember that when I go looking for a new phone.

5 days and counting!

Whew!  I managed to get all the presents for my co-workers done and passed out.  I also sold a couple more of the wrist rests for the computer.  Overall not too bad.

Here is the picture of the little basket of wrist pads.  The longer one is for the neck but they were using it for a pad to put in front of the keyboard also.  LOL.  Didn't think of that.

You see that little Christmas tree?  It's approximately 35 years old.  I  inherited upon the death of my mothers best friend (she was like a second mother to me) a number of years ago.  The tree is all beaded and has individually wrapped presents and a little train, etc. under the doom.  I bring it out every year and keep it in my office so it doesn't get broken.  :)

Now that I have finished those, it's time to work on the next Christmas Present.  That is my penguin wall hanging for my friend Dan.  He will be visiting his Fiance on New Years Eve so will mail it to her.  She is the one that I am doing the Herd of Turtles for but I won't have it done in time.  After Christmas I'll have try and get it done for her birthday in January.  Her Christmas present (for what it's worth) will be some Chocolate Silk Coffee.  She LOVES chocolate and is also a coffee drinker.  I need to try and get it in the mail by the weekend.

The rain is starting to turn to snow now so that will help get me going (I think) on working on things.

Christmas is coming.....

Yeah, I know, it's not news.  The calendar has been telling us this day is coming for over a year.  The retail shops have been telling us...well we won't talk about them.

I have been busy doing the wrist pads and started on a couple of neck socks.  A picture of them will be posted tomorrow.  Mom reminded me that I have to finish up a mini for one of the people in her nursing home.  I managed to figure out what the design would be (it's in EQ7) and have it fused onto one of the napkins from the Nursing Home.  Now I need to hand stitch it down and quilt it.  She wants a pale pink for the binding so that won't be too bad.

I also received a Christmas present this week.  My friend Shelley Gardner, who does great Long Arm work, sent me an engagement calendar for 2013.  Here it is.

I'll probably take periodic pictures of the quilts shown in it.  Isn't it great?  This was on my wish list for Christmas so I am glad that she took the not so subtle hint.  :)  She did say it was part one of my Christmas present so now I am wondering what else she has up her sleeve.  I will share it with you when I find out.

Happy Birthday Mom (Edith Bromeland)

Today (Monday, December 10, 2012) my mother turned 93.  Happy Birthday Mom!!!!!

I actually gave her birthday presents to her yesterday when my brother and I were there for biscuits and gravy Sunday breakfast.

I had three mini's ready for her and I let her pick which one she wanted.  She could pick one for her birthday and one for Christmas.  She didn't know that I was going to take the one for Christmas back with me (grins). She looked at them and looked at them and finally said she couldn't decide.  I just responded with "I guess you have to keep them both then."  She beemed and soon I had the two mini's put away in her dresser drawer.  They weren't Christmas or Autumn colors so they will come out when it is warmer weather.  Here are the pictures of her.  They were taken with my cell phone so they aren't the best ones of her.

Rainy Day

Got back from having breakfast with mom.  She's doing good.  Tomorrow she turns 93.  She is in the nursing home and I go have breakfast with her every Sunday.  Coming home afterwards, I was stopped for about 10 minutes for friends to cross the road.  :)

A Little Bit of Color

Hi Everybody!  Ready for some color?  Remember earlier when I said that Leah Day's FMQ stitch inspired me to do something?  Here it is.  Not much mind you but colorful.  LOL.

I put in my fabric and did some FMQ on it.  It was inspired by the hairball FMQ stitch but I didn't totally do it.  Instead I did what I felt like.  LOL.  it can't be wrong then can it?  I decided that my desk needed a new mug rug.  This ones measures around 7.5" x 6.5".  I did the circles overlapping a little bit so that small "e" were made.  After doing that I decided to add color.  I couldn't find my colored pencils to play with but I DID find my Sharpies so here is my colored mug rug.  Not fancy but functional but it will brighten up my desk.  The black marks are my little loops that I did.  Hmmm.  Perhaps I should have called this posting "a little loopy".  :)

This started out as a white on white dotted fabric.   That comes through as texture on the coloring I think.  It makes me smile and grin when I see it for it also reminds me how much fun it was to color it.  On a rainy day this will brighten me up.

Quilted Placemats

Surfing through my emails and things and I eventually found this quite little project.  It would be great for first time quilters and so easy to do.

I don't normally share the links to tutorials (but maybe I will in the future) but this caught my eye.  It was a little scrappy on the edges but plan in the middle. Check it out.  Some of you might baulk at the quilting?  Don't sweat it.  She shows you how to do it.  You mark your center fabric with something that will wash out.  Clover puts out pens that work, washable markers (Wal Mart has generic and name brand in the crayon section) or chalk but I don't like to use that.  I am loving using the washable markers (notice not crayons but markers) lately so might use those.  This design can be used for place mats for every occasion.  Instead of the scrappy look, you could just use a longer strip of seasonal fabric.  Pink ribbon fabric for breast cancer awareness...some cute St. Patty's day in March...Fall Harvest or Halloween or....well you get the idea.

If I make them I'll be sure to post some pictures.

 

Some more wrist pads

A friend saw my rice filled wrist pads and sometime in our conversation I remembered that I had some paw print flannel.  I work for Northern Illinois University and our mascot is the Huskie.  I have scaps of flannel that have paw prints on them.  The background is black and the paw prints are white.  Our school colors are Black and Red so it works quite nicely I think as a "themed" wrist pad.  So one of these will be going to Diane for a present for a special lady in her life.

Here is a picture of it stuffed.  I still have to sew the bottom shut which I would have done today at work but I forgot my needles.  How's that for planning?  I have the thread but no needle.  LOL.  I might go to the main office and raid their little sewing kit.

December? Already?

I looked at the calendar this morning and gasped.  It was the 6th of December already and I'm not nearly as ready for....anything...as I want to be.  Mom's 93rd birthday is in four days and guess what I CAN'T find?  Yep.  Those little wall hangings I was doing for her.

Luckily in my panic to find them this morning I managed to find some fabric that I had forgotten I had.  When that pile of fabric tilted over there were the mini wall hangings.  Perhaps the fabric conspired with the mini's.  That's my story and I'll stick to it.  :)

I will be taking three mini's to her on Sunday and letting her pick out which one she would like to have for her birthday present.  I'll post which one she chooses. 

I've been at work for an hour now.  I woke up early and just couldn't sleep.  At least I'll get something accomplished.  When I got to work, no I didn't start work THAT early, I went through some of my quilting magazines there and decided I could get rid of some more.  That will help clear up office clutter too.  One of my shelves holds half work stuff and half quilting stuff.  Right now I'm working on different mug rugs.

The two flower in the lower left hand corner have free motion quilting done on them and all I need to do is sew on the binding.  The others have been fused on but I need to stitch them.  I'm thinking that the two red poinsettia's  might end up as pot holders but I haven't made up my mind yet.

Back to Work Today

Vacation time is over and now it's time for me to get back to work. That's ok.  I had a nice little break (up to the time when I pulled muscles in back) and am sort of ready to get back to work.  I did manage to get some little mug rugs done (and even did FMQ on them) out of a panel of pre printed flowers.  I'm still working on those because I have enough squares to make up 10 mug rugs.  They'll go out for birthdays or something like that next summer.  Quick little thank you presents, birthday presents or just "cheer up" presents.  I think I will be doing some more mug rugs but seasonal ones soon.  I found a cute snowman pattern that I think I can use and found some more pre printed squares which have dogs on them which would be good for my male friends or dog lovers.

What else did I work on?  I did some more wrist pads for the computer.  I am going to give them out at Christmas to the office I think.  I have some African fabric which will work well for that.  I also managed to do the Penguin top.  Need to sandwich it and get it quilted.  I like how it turned out.  I was going to send it to a friends fiance but when he heard it had penguins on it I was told in no uncertain terms that "HE" gets penguin stuff.  His fiance gets turtle stuff.  So this will be going to him instead.  Perhaps it will get there in time for his Christmas present.  I told him that I didn't think he would want it since it would be made to go on the wall.  Being a male I know he has some pictures on the wall but not "home made stuff".  He said he'd make an exception.  LOL.

I also managed to finish up (I think) the top for the the red and white wall hanging. 

This was suppose to be the center for a wall hanging.  If you scroll through my blog postings you'll see a picture of what the whole wall hanging should look like.  I thought it was too busy so I think I'll just stop here.  The center block, according to the pattern, would also have redwork flowers in between each leaf.  It looked crowded to me but I kinda like this.  What do you think?

That's about it.  Oh yeah, I forgot that my friend Connie took a picture of me a couple of weeks ago.  Who knows when I'll let somebody take another picture of me so I thought I'd go ahead and post it.  Can't say you weren't warned.  So put on your blinders and sit down...This is what I look like (especially since I haven't colored my hair in a bit.  Won't do it until income tax return comes in...lol).

Vacation time almost here but....

I'm off next week for vacation so I am getting all ready for that.  I have started to put some little guides in my calendar for it.  Like from 1-2 pick out fabric for X project.  Obviously I will not stick to it that much but it is more the fact that I am writing it down to remind me what I "wanted" to do. 

On the list will be a winter wall hanging.  I saw a cut mitten one and since I now have my Applique Block of the Month snowflakes from

I think they might be added to it.  I've mentioned Customquiltkits before (when I received the adorable little mini ornament appliques) but wanted to mention them again.  Rose Hall, the owner, does a wonderful job of putting together these little kits.  Each one is $5.  This time I bought two packets.  Each packet has 12 snowflakes (all the same) in it and they already have the fusible on the back of them.

Another one Done - pink for mom

Well mom likes to have pink things so here is another mini for her to choose from.  Today, when I visited her, she handed me a napkin and asked me to make something with it for another person.  Now before you think of the napkin as a small thing, look at the picture below.  That is the size of one of her napkins.  :)

You might also wonder about me always using the same grid pattern on her projects as well as square binding ends instead of mitered.  It's actually pretty simple.  Mom hates mitered corners and she likes the straight lines.  She hates the squiggles of FMQ and at least this way all her wall hangings will have the same consistent  look.

That doesn't mean I won't give up on learning FMQ.  I want to practice the brick pattern more.  It didn't turn out too bad when I tried it for the first time.  If you are interested, this is the link to Leona's youtube video on how to do it.  It's not that bad of one for a beginner.  I like how she mentions that her lines are completely straight and they are wiggled a bit to represent old bricks.  Of course I didn't have to "wiggle" mine....they came that way automatically.  LOL.

Free Motion Quilting Bucket List

This month the bucket list produced Free Motion Quilting as our topic.  Hmmm.  Those dreaded words.  Can't say that I like Free Motion Quilting (FMQ) but believe it or not....I did it.  No, I mean I finished the project.  Some of you might have seen the black and white mini that I did and didn't like.  Since I didn't like it already, I thought...why not use that for the FMQ Bucket List this month/  I already didn't like it so it could only improve.

So here are some progress pictures.  I do not like FMQ and I am not good at it.  I will admit that I don't tremble in fear any more of it so that is saying something I guess.  LOL.

Here you can see what the black and white mini looked like.  Aren't the multi colored butterfly straight pins cute?  Perhaps I should have left them on.  :)

This was already sectioned off into areas that said "fill me" so I did.  No I didn't have any particular design in mind.  I figured I needed help with all of it so I just went with what came to mind.  It's not great and some of it is actually terrible.   That's what practicing is all about isn't it?

The final results

Something a little different

Why is it that just as soon as I am ready for bed that an idea hits me and I can't seem to get to sleep unless I get up and try it?  Now if that idea is too complicated, I'll just ignore myself.  Last night's idea was simple (if you discount trying to get rice into a bag at 11 p.m.) so I got up and tried to make something.

The "something" turned out to be a wrist pad.  The pattern was simple and I know I just quickly stuffed it and didn't close it up nicely but then this is more me and the first time so there is plenty of time in order to get better.

It is pictured as how it would be according to the pattern, but I found it nicer to use with the curved area pointing towards me instead of towards the mouse.  The nice thing is that it can go either way as well as it can be heated up in the microwave for those days when your wrist is hurting and you want a some heat on it.

I brought it to work and had a couple of people try it out.  It became apparent that while everybody liked it, their were requests for it to be made a little larger and not filled so full of rice.  THEN one  of the ladies, after I heated it up, put it on her nose since she was having sinus problems today, and LOVED it.  She said to make some longer so that it would cover the eyes also.  The bridge part (curved part) just fit her nose right so it rested on it.  I will try to take my pattern that I had found online (gotta love the freebies)

I also managed to take a snapshot of my work bulletin board which is currently acting as a substitute design wall. If you look closely you can see that my hearts are about half way stitched down.  The eagle, flowers and snowmen are all done.

Another finish

Ahh...Another mini for mom finished tonight.  Here it is...

So with mini number two finished, it was time to start mini number three.  It looks rather pale right now since it is just fused on but I'll figure out something.  I have a pink fabric in mind for a border on it so we'll see how it goes.  Now to go through my embroidery floss and see what color to use for the blanket stitch.

The hearts were cut out with my GO! and it is put on white linen.  Actually it is put on a white linen napkin that mom insisted on giving me.  One of MANY white linen napkins mom gave me.  She wants her two pillows made out of the white linen napkins also.  :)  She does love to give me challenges.

Free Motion Quilting

I signed up to do the Free Motion Quilting (FMQ) challenge and haven't had the time to do most of it.  I did watch Leah Day's video today and it's like a quilting light bulb lit up over my head.  Now, for everyone who knows me, please sit down before you read the next line...ok...ready?

It couldn't have come at a better time also.  The bucket list drawing this month is FMQ and I might use this as my example.  :)  Don't you just love it when a plan comes together?

Oh yes...I also promised you a better picture of mom's snowman mini.  Here it is.  Ignore the yellow/goldenrod colors at the top.  I hung the snowman over another mini that I'm doing for her and that's what you're seeing in the background.

The Start of Presents for Mom

Mom's birthday is December 10th and she'll be 93!  I thought this year she might like to have a choice on what mini she gets for her birthday as well as for Christmas.  I finished one of them tonight and here is a quick snapshot of it.  I'll try to get a better picture when I get to work.

I was in a snowman block swap last year and one of the ladies, Brenda Sutter, did this wonderful block.  She gave me an extra block which was a little larger and tonight I quilted it and put it together for mom.  Some of the things that mom mentioned she'd like are:

1.  A pillow for her bed (think sofa pillow size) which has embroidered flowers on it.
2.  A pillow for her back for when she sits in her wheel chair.
3.  More small wall hangings.

Of course the usual is also on her list.  That would be:

1.  Lipstick
2.  McDonald's hot picante sauce (she uses 3 packets at every meal if she has enough)
3.  More visits
4.  more hugs
5.  start the list over.

What are you doing for the holidays?  Has anybody ever made pot holders?  I am going to try and make some of them but haven't decided yet on the material.  I think my first ones, shall we call those trial ones(?), shall just be some seasonal fabric and not a particular pattern.  Start simple and work up.

I have another wall hanging to do which my friend Connie and I will be each doing. She is ahead of me on it so I'll have to catch up.  Hopefully over thanksgiving when I have some days off.

So many projects....so little time.  :)

playing with the GO!

I was playing with the GO! and my pink fabric and cut some pink ribbons and then looked at the waste fabric from it.  I cut my pink fabric 5x6 even though the actual ribbon is closer to 3x5 but that was ok.  I looked through my GO! dies and decided it was time to make more dots and flowers.  :)

If in doubt...make dots.  Actually I am putting together a couple of give aways for my FB quilting groups and a sandwich size bag of Heat n Bond lite backed leftovers from my GO! cuttings will go out to a person.  Most of them were purple with some green leaves so this time it's pink to add to the bag.

The smaller things like small circles or flower centers are good to use up small scraps of fabric.  The small flowers also worked out pretty good.  They are only 1.5" so it doesn't have to be that big of a scrap to cut them out.  It will be interesting to see what people will make with them.

I think sometime I might just take a small piece of a solid color background and just go crazy and stick on a bunch of those small circles.  :)  

What? I have to clean...Again?

That's what it seems like.  i swear it wasn't that long ago that I went through my fabrics and weeded them out and organized.  Yet I looked over at the corner of the fabric and....sighed.  Ok.  For those who know me that's not unusual.  But still....I have to clean that room again today.  I started out thinking that I could get the whole room straightened up.  Silly me.  I DID manage to get half of it straightened up though.  Just enough room so that I can work on something else.  LOL.

Here's what it is currently looking like....or at least half of it is.

This is the start of my mock up of Dan's castle quilt.  I know it isn't much.  I have to put the top row on as well as decorate the sides.  I am thinking of enlarging the castles or adding to it.  Still in the development stage.

The old sewing machine (Singer Confidence Quilter).  I still keep it set up on that side of the room.

It took forever to get the fabric put away.  :)  That's not all but 90% of it is all put away.  That's half of my sewing room.  Now to get to work on the other half.  Not this week.  I'll do it another week.  LOL.

What else did I do?  I've been working on little applique projects that needed to be appliqued by hand.  I had some set backs though.  The breast cancer mini was marked with blue chalk (fons and porter) but it would NOT disappear.  After multiple hand washings (I don't own a washer n dryer and won't go out to spend the money to wash EVERY project I've started), this is the closest that I have to getting the blue out.  It didn't brush out like the yellow chalk did.

It looks like it is pretty much out.  If seen up close you can still see a faint blue along the stitching line.  I can probably live with this.  now to do the binding some time.  Hey Kat....This was done with the Window method of applique!

I decided to use another method of marking my guide lines and on this this next project I used an orange washable marker.  So here you see what it looks like before I started the washing process.

Now, after just one washing (versus the four that I did for the blue chalk) this is what it turned out to be.

I might have to use the washable markers more often.  I will also point out that the yellow chalk pencil that I had used on some black fabric that I was making bias tape with worked out fine.  Is it just the blue that didn't work well?  I don't know.  It is fun to try and experiment with different methods so you have alternatives.  I think if I will use blue that I still like my Blue Water Soluble pens the best.  Markers might be second and eventually win out because of the variety of colors to choose from.  This one is also a mini and I will be putting binding on it another day.  I think that I will have three mini's for mom to choose from for her birthday on December 10th.  That way she will have a choice and she might like that.  I'll let you know what the other one is after I work on it some more.  :)
